A regional healthcare system serving communities across Wisconsin wanted to increase public engagement around preventive care, screenings, wellness education, and critical health topics such as stroke and cardiac response.

Reaching nearly a quarter million households across 13 hospitals and numerous clinics, Health Connection evolved from a traditional quarterly newsletter into an award-winning consumer health magazine supported by a growing digital and social media presence.

Previous advertising efforts had generated limited response despite significant investment and increasing competition from another rapidly expanding healthcare provider in the region.

Over the next decade, Health Connection Magazine became a trusted community resource—helping increase screenings and event participation, strengthen brand visibility, and, in at least one documented case, contribute to a life-saving medical response.

The Challenge

The organization faced several overlapping challenges:

  • Low engagement with existing public awareness campaigns
  • Growing regional competition from another healthcare system
  • Difficulty encouraging preventive screenings and event participation
  • The need to communicate complex health information in a more approachable way
  • Managing communications efficiently across multiple regions with varying local priorities

The original plan called for a standard provider newsletter focused primarily on:

  • new physicians
  • clinic updates
  • screening opportunities
  • general wellness tips

But a more strategic opportunity quickly emerged.

Strategic Approach

Rather than producing a traditional institutional newsletter, the publication was reimagined as a consumer-oriented health magazine designed to feel engaging, approachable, and genuinely useful.

The focus shifted from organizational messaging to audience value.

Content strategy centered on:

  • easy-to-understand health education
  • visual storytelling
  • practical wellness guidance
  • emotionally relevant patient topics
  • highly scannable layouts and infographics
  • approachable, non-clinical language

The publication was intentionally designed to compete not with hospital brochures—but with the types of magazines people actually chose to read and keep.

To maximize both relevance and efficiency, editions were customized by region:

  • a shared interior maintained production efficiency and brand consistency
  • localized covers and regional inserts featured area providers, events, and community-specific content

This created stronger audience connection without dramatically increasing production costs.

Expanding the Audience Through Social Media

To increase reach and maintain audience engagement between publication cycles, the initiative expanded into digital and social media with the launch of the Health Connection Facebook page.

The platform extended the publication’s mission through:

  • health tips
  • recipes and “healthy makeovers”
  • wellness education
  • event promotion
  • seasonal health guidance
  • audience interaction and feedback

Unlike traditional print communications, the social media strategy also provided valuable audience insight—revealing which topics generated the strongest engagement and helping shape future editorial direction.

Execution

The initiative included:

  • Editorial planning and consumer-focused content development
  • Graphic-heavy magazine-style layout design
  • Health education infographics and visual storytelling
  • Regionally customized publication versions
  • Provider spotlights and event promotion
  • Cross-channel integration between print and social media
  • Audience engagement through Facebook content and interaction
  • Ongoing refinement based on audience response and participation trends

The publication maintained a strong emphasis on accessibility, helping readers better understand important health information without overwhelming them with medical jargon.

Impact

Health Connection Magazine significantly outperformed the engagement levels of previous awareness campaigns.

Results included:

  • Increased participation in screenings and community health events
  • Strong audience loyalty and repeat readership
  • Expanded engagement through social media
  • Greater visibility in a highly competitive regional healthcare market
  • Improved audience connection through educational, consumer-friendly communication

Audience feedback demonstrated the publication’s deeper impact.

Readers frequently wrote in to share how much they enjoyed the magazine—particularly its approachable tone, visual design, and healthy recipe features.

One response stood out above all others.

After reading an article explaining the often-overlooked symptoms of heart attacks in women, one reader recognized the warning signs in her sister and sought emergency medical help immediately—an action she credited with saving her sister’s life.

The publication continued successfully for ten years, until the healthcare organization was ultimately acquired by another system.
